"Prioritize Your Health: Schedule Your Annual Check-Up Today!"

Why is it so important to get your yearly checkups?

As you approach your fifties, it is essential to take proactive steps in managing the symptoms of perimenopause and Menopause. Staying ahead of your symptoms can make the process easier for you. During your annual checkup, your doctor can screen for potential health issues and suggest lifestyle changes that could improve your overall well-being. It is also crucial to have a doctor who understands Menopause and can discuss any new symptoms or concerns you may have. You can prepare for your appointment by listing questions to ensure you remember everything necessary, such as writing down your family history, journaling your symptoms and the times they occur, considering your preferences for managing your symptoms, and writing down the specific tests you would like. Remember, Menopause is manageable, so don't hesitate to advocate for yourself.

My annual Visit

During my yearly Visit in July 2022, I had a pap smear and discussed my latest symptoms and concerns with my doctor. I had recently switched to this doctor and was happy with my decision. I had been experiencing irregular bleeding and pressure in my pelvic area, and I hoped my doctor would have some recommendations to address these issues. I underwent the necessary blood work and a yearly pap smear at the appointment. A few days later, my doctor called to inform me that my pap smear showed abnormal results and further testing was required. After more tests, it was confirmed that I had uterine cancer. A DNC procedure was recommended to confirm the diagnosis, which came back positive. Though it was a shock, I was pleased to know a hysterectomy could be the only possible treatment. I was immediately referred to an oncologist, Dr. Jonathan OH, MD, to develop a treatment plan. We decided on a hysterectomy, and depending on the results, we would discuss further treatments after the tissue results.

A little information about uterine cancer: uterine cancer forms in the lining of your uterus, called the endometrium. All women are at risk for uterine cancer as long as they have a uterus, and the risk increases with age. However, most uterine cancers are found in women in Menopause. Uterine cancer is treatable when found early. The symptoms of perimenopause, Menopause, and uterine cancer can be similar, making it challenging to differentiate between them.

Common symptoms of uterine cancer include:

  • Pain during intercourse.

  • Increased frequency of urination.

  • Pain or pressure in the pelvic area

  • Lower back pain.

"I had no idea that my symptoms were related to uterine cancer. I just thought they were a part of aging. Regular annual checkups are essential for detecting potential health issues early. In my case, the cancer was detected early, and I only needed a hysterectomy for treatment. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of getting your yearly exams!"

During a doctor's visit, these are some of the tests you should request:

The comprehensive women's panel, thyroid panel, and hemoglobin A1C tests. Ensure the tests include vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, iron, folate, and all the Bs.
